Spencer Thomas Kilts - Timeline 1823-????

Spencer Thomas Kilts (Thomas Kilts, Spencer T Kilts, S T Kilts), if these are all the same person, which I believe they are as there are many facts to suggest that they are, led a very interesting life. I have found 3 different women listed with him:

Melissa, they had 4 children - born in Madison, New York.
Clara, they had 1 child - born in Iowa.
Amy L Ellsworth, married her in Henry County, Illinois.

I think that sometime between 1860 and 1867, he married Clara and moved to Iowa, taking the two oldest boys (Preston and Homer) with him (supported by Mn marriage records). Where Clinton D Kilts was born, then they all moved to Redwood area of Mn. Where he purchased land a coupld of times, and Homer and Preston were married.

I looks like sometime between 1875-1878, he moved on to Ill, and his wife Clara moved back to New York to live with a cousin (1880 US Census).

I have been told that, it is thought that he at some point when west into Indian Terrritory and did not come back or was killed. Some said he was part of Custer's Last Stand, but he is not listed as one of the dead or wounded there,as reported in the Bismarck (Dakota Territory) "Tribune", dated 6 July 1876.

These are the documents from Ancestry.com that I have found so far. Still would like to find what happed to Melissa and the two younger children, where Spencer Thomas was in the 1865 state censuses, the 1870 US Census, the 1880 US Census, and when he died and where. Did he die in Henry County Illinois or did he move on again?

Still living at home, a peddler. Has a twin named Harvey.

Spencer Thomas Kilts(Rlls) 1860 Census Age 37

He has now married to Melissa, and has 4 children, must have been married right after the 1850 Census.
I have not been able to find any referrence to Melissa Kilts except for this one.

Spencer T Kilts 15 Aug 1872 New Ulm Minnesota Land Purchase 160 Acres #7043

Have not found and referrence to Spencer T Kilts in the states 1865 census or 1870 US Census.
But in the 1875 MN Census, he is listed being in the same household as a Clara Kilts age 37, and a Cliniton D Kilts age 8.
Later, in 1880 US Census, Clara and Cliniton are listed as living with a cousin in New York, and she is also listed as married.

In 1860 US Census, Homer and Spencer are listed at the 2 oldest children of Spencer T Kilts.
This is likely Homer who would be about 23, and the marriage is where Spencer T Kilts had land.
Also, there is a marriage in 1878 of Preston Kilts in a town near here.
It looks like Spencer T married Clara and moved to Iowa with Homer and Spencer, and then later moved to Redwood area of MN.
Can not find any referrence to Melisa or the two younger children.

Looks like Spencer T moved to Henry Ill and married Amy.
But then it looks like Amy married someone else in 1881.
Did Spencer T die here or did he move on again?

Spencer Preston married Ida Mae Slater, and then them moved to the Fergus Falls, MN area, purchased land and had a family.
Later moving to ND and then Canada.
And changing their name to Kelts.
